I am a coin collector and the grading bias argument is bs or sour grapes on the part of collectors who don't know how to grade.
In life I like options. 99% of chips will never be worth enough to slab. But if I'm going to pay five figures for a chip I'd like an expert opinion that it is genuine and not been messed with. Buying chips sight unseen with bad Ebay pics is a crap shoot, personally having a third party graded chip would be of great value to me.
Just because the issue was "settled" 15 years ago doesn't mean it is right for today. Times change. For example, election voting by mail might have been fine 15 years ago. But in the age of the internet it should be questioned as Joe and Sarah suggested.
My two cents.
