Ed Hertel mentioned a couple of familiar names in his remarks on
the Wonder Bar in Virginia City. According to author George Williams
Gordon Lane originally tended bar at the Washoe Club then leased
the Wonder bar next to the post office in 1945. When it was destroyed
by fire in 1950 he moved to the Union Brewery and retired in
1985. The UB was a hangout for writers, musicians, artists and liars.
Their motto was “We Serve Whiskey”. I ordered a beer in there once
and got a dirty look from Gordon. He drank with the customers and
claimed to drink a quart a day. He kept a stool in the doorway to
discourage tourists. As for Len Haffey, he moved to the Delta Saloon
where he dealt roulette. Photos show him dealing to Charles Clegg and
Lucius Bebee, well known VC residents. There’s a photo of “Honest Len
Haffey in PTs bar at Jones and 215 in LV.
