Today we have a glass from the short-lived Treasure Bay Casino in Tunica or as stated on the glass, Robinsonville, MS. (Open: 05/09/1994, Close: 05/23/1995) Always wonder why casino owners put up huge investments and then close withing a year or two later or less in some cases. A news article from 1996 sheds a little light on the subject.
Monday, June 17, 1996
"By mid-year 1995 in Mississippi, nearly one casino closed for every three casinos that remained open eight of 27. Tunica County alone hosted six of those eight closures since the first casino opened there in 1992, according to the Mississippi Gaming Commissions 1995 annual report. Two of the casinos Southern Belle Casino and Treasure Bay Casino filed for bankruptcy."
"Mark Calvert, former chief financial officer of Treasure Bay, alluded to problems with the casinos landowner, who he claimed demanded a 4 percent cut of the gross revenue to renew its lease. Calvert also cited a conflict with Casino Center in providing an access road from the center to Treasure Bay, which sits a few hundred yards away but has no immediate access to the main road connecting Casino Center to Highway 61. The missing road hurt business, he said, which made it impossible to forfeit 4 percent to the landowner. The casino closed in May 1995 and sold its assets."
