I was going through some old chip files on my computer and saw one of an antique chip project a few collectors and I had worked on over 10 years ago. It was a project to show the known varieties of designs on old chips. This is the group of Seymour code PE-RR Rough Rider chips. We had used Dale's book as a jumping off point. I got a copy of an old Kernan chip catalog from Robert Eisenstadt and we all got the best chips we could find for photos. Here's what we came up with. The last rider (variation e) was from the back of Dale's book. It was an illustration from an old Harris catalog from 1900. I don't know anyone that's actually seen that variation. The other catalog chips I show are from Kernan. I inverted the image to have the horse running in the right direction. I think that one is closest to version C but, it still is not a complete match. We've always had to take the catalog art with a grain of salt. The one thing that is disturbing to me is, many of the people who helped with the project have given up chip collecting.
