Dogpatch was the creation of Al Capp, the cartoonist who created
the Lil Abner comic strip. Abner, Daisy Mae, Mammy Yokum and
the rest of the hillbillys all lived there. I imagine the Sportsman
(opened in 1954) took the name Dogpatch as a gag name
for the Pittman area. There is no red real Dogpatch Nevada.
Of course all this is conjecture on my part.
