Re: Movie stills.
In Response To: Re: Movie stills. ()

As I stated, the stills and information were for Jo's benefit and knowing what I do about Le Cercle's jetons and the fact that they started with 3 chemin de fer tables only (as Mr Mills stated in a newspaper article) staffed by Sicilians (quite possibly trained by the late, great Dino Cellini) the 1964 stills could well have been how they did it (especially as they only had 3 jetons at that time). Plus the main difference between the other ones you mentioned are that the 2 stills shown were actually filmed within Le Cercle not on a set (as with Dr No and other films) so would be as accurate as you can get, or they should be as why would they fabricate it? So, totally different to the ones you mentioned.
French roulette went out of fashion mainly because of the reasons I have stated already, basically AR made more money. As far as I know, the Americans mainly preferred craps and whilst there may well have been quite a few that played BJ and roulette I've been told by most of the staff I've spoken to that Arabs made up most of the high end clientele especially roulette players who probably wouldn't have had the patience to wait for the time it took to deal a FR game.
As for French roulette jetons, as somebody pointed out to me (and I sort of knew/thought already), cash chips were mainly used and if that was the case then until we find somebody who worked with them who can tell us what they were actually used for, we may never know for sure. I mentioned them as FR jetons as I'd thought that maybe Playboy decided to take out the uncertainty and hassle out of the staff having to know every single bet and who it belonged to.
Not having a value on them creates the most uncertainty but they could have been used for many things (or games).
I will continue to ask around but as it was a long time ago, there aren't that many of the older ex staff left nowadays.
Still, a great find and always good to find new Playboy stuff even if we don't know exactly what they were used for.
