…Have told it before, but it has been a while. So for those who are new, here it is.
Back in 1998, my girlfriend at the time, told me her mom knew a professional poker player who had some casino chips. When she went to California to visit her mom one weekend, they met up with the poker player.
He had 27 of the $25 Aladdin chip. But he told my girlfriend that they were counterfeit. 😳 He gave them to her & said she could have them. When she got back home & I looked at them, I knew immediately that they were not counterfeit. She called the poker player to tell him. He said that he was given the chips by a guy who owed him money & the $675 was a payment towards that. He then gave the chips to a friend who was coming to Las Vegas & asked him to cash them in. The friend came back with the chips & told the poker player they were counterfeit. He then threw them in a drawer & forgot about them.
I am guessing what happened is that the guy took them to the Aladdin & they told him at the cashiers cage that they were not redeemable. The reason being that the 120 day redemption period had passed. He thought they would not cash them because they were counterfeit & told that to the poker player.
My girlfriend called the poker player to tell him & told him that I could sell them. He said to go ahead & that she & I could split the money. I ended up selling most of them & kept one for my collection.
There are no doubt more casino chips out there, in the back of a drawer or in a box, or somewhere else. Tossed there to be forgotten. All with their own stories. Maybe someone forgot to cash them in, or they were in the belongings of a family member who passed away. That is why if you are a collector, you should be asking your friends, acquaintances or anyone you run into, if they have any casino chips. 😊
