Andy, FWIW, a copy of the chipguide code from 2004 shows Greg at that time had a message at the top stating "Please credit Greg's Chip Guide for the use of any images".
He also had code embedded preventing the direct linking of any images on chipguide.com to any site he did not own.
Earliest use I could find of 'compliance' was 9/27/2004
