Re: Are casino chips "numismatic items" ?

I think what the HPA covers are numismatic items such as those which are part of a coinage which, they define a coinage as meaning made by a government.... I do not know of any casino chip made by or for the US government ... Casino chips are not covered in the Act but, the Act has some pretty good rules pertaining to how imitations should be marked in order to protect...

Yes that's true, but the act and the laws, don't specify anything except numismatic and political items. There's an odd addition? We aren't the only ones that have to beware and deal with fakes from offshore. I go to antique auctions over the Winter, looking for chips and finding little, but... the number of fake and reproduction items hasn't slowed down at all.

While we are just one area, the HPA should be broader in it's coverage of collectibles and antiques.

There's part that says, should be permanently marked. But some of the offshore junk comes with a "Made In..." label that's easily pealed off. Some are outright fakes and frauds, designed and created to fool people. I've seen some pretty convincing attempts and watched people bid ten times what they could buy the same thing for on eBay.

I think the answer for us is less than legislation, which can't be enforced. All of us need to be "Buyer Beware" and the group needs to educate widely that there are fakes, reproductions and look alike items, on the market. We aren't going to stop this.

These ceramic chips are produced for home play sets, and I don't think they are designed to trick or create reproductions.

For the other people, there's nothing we can do about what will happen in the future or in 30 years or what someone else might try to intentionally represent these as, or mistakenly believe, and try to sell them. eBay and Etsy and other places are full of items, that the seller essentially makes up their version of why the item is Rare and Collectible. Trying to stop this is beyond us and the sites are pretty much immune from prosecution, if they claim they don't know and that they make an effort to keep this trash out.

The only answer is knowledge and education.

I'm sure that anyone who makes future videos that include fantasy, reproductions or tribute items, will be more diligent and include the source and creation of these replica chips. That's all we can do.
