Toiyabe Club, Gabbs Nev.

Gabbs was a small mining town that produced magnesium for the war effort in the early 40s. For a
while the Toiyabe Club was the only club owned by the prominent Smith family. The locals called it
the Bucket of Blood probably due to fighting by the rowdy miners. It was a large operation employing
16 dealers and ten bartenders. I believe the place opened in the early 40s and closed around 1961.
The BC Wills chips shown in the Chipguide could not have been produced before March 1964 (according
to Howard Herz) and not used in the club. The photos are from the book" Gabbs Valley, Nevada" by
Fenstermaker and show the club in 1944. Later Jack Douglass (Cal-Neva, Comstock clubs) opened
a place called the Pastime with a crap and two 21 games but in burned after being open six weeks.
The Keystone operated in the 60s and 70s by a guy named Tom Jones. I remembered him from a
place he had in Gerlach (Desert Club I think). I took the photo after it closed.
