I've stayed there a couple of times in the past year, with the most recent time being about six months ago. The casino is a full casino with electronic games, table games, and a poker room. The casino has a shortage of places to eat though, especially late at night. So if you're a late night gambler, you should grab a bite before things close down and you can't even get a cup of coffee.
The hotel is decent, but it doesn't have direct access to the casino; it's across the street. There are two options for walking from the hotel to the casino: (1) you can walk out the front of the hotel and then across the street or (2) you can walk out the side of the hotel across an alley/courtyard into an adjacent building/garage and then walk downstairs to access a tunnel that goes under the street to the casino.
Regardless of the drawbacks, if you want to stay at/near a casino in New Orleans, Harrahs is still your best bet, because the other New Orleans casinos (Treasure Chest & Boomtown) are old riverboats. Same for Baton Rouge, about 90 minutes north-ish.
I'll leave you with the fact that Cafe Du Monde and the French Quarter are only about 15 minutes from Harrahs if you're walking.
