Robert called me the day after the auction. He bought the chips in eastern PA. I’ve attended auctions there in the past. Unfortunately I didn’t hear of the auction. He told me he only paid $3000 or $4000. I told him I would find out who owned the chips as I owned Lloyd’s Register of American Yachts for several different years. I called him back with the widener attribution
I know several collectors, including myself, who would have gotten a set from the $75g buyer. I believe $500 a chip was the max anyone would pay. I believe there were 4 chips missing but that’s immaterial. One chip missing is the same. The potential buyer felt a complete 600 chip set was more valuable than a not complete 700 chip set. I know I probably would have bid the same whether it was a 500, 600, or 700 chip set.
I don’t know what offers were made to RE. I don’t even know if the $75g guy made a formal offer. RE had made it clear he wasn’t selling. There aren’t that many ivory collectors. Kenny knew most of them. $75,000 was the largest offer knew
Saying that one chip would sell for the sales price OF Roberts entire cost is just not FACT. Why embellish?
