Determining Rarity
In Response To: Value and Rarity ()

Hi Charles, and well said.

Is there any way to know how many of a chip is out there? If I have (supposedly) the only one, but somewhere out there is a dozen boxes that may or may not come out into the open, is it still rare?

A great example is of the gentleman earlier who came upon beautiful old chips he got in a auction. He presented pictures and promises of them to never be released or sold, etc, but what of the unknown future?

PCGS and the other grading systems out there have population estimates but that is of their own slabbed coins. I'm not sure if you could ever know coin populations but could it be done with chips?

Thanks for the discussion.

Jeff.
