I know an airline industry insider who gives me the scoop. The line "mechanical problems" is used alot, and many times its not true. It's used because nobody would complain that the airline is being safe and thinking of the customer. Behind the scenes however, its more likely (especially if later cancelled), that it was staffing issues.
