Exposure to water can turn gold hot stamps silver. I have no idea why. It's one of the many reasons to be super careful about cleaning hot stamped chips. I saw it happen to a chip of mine long ago. A drop of water hit the hot stamp and it changed instantly, or at least that's what it looked like.
