Okay, see this is why I've been on the fence about this... I'd love to more information, but there are only a few people that could know about this information and many would not like to talk about this topic. I'd love to have more transparency sometimes and if there isn't than that could be to save the value on chips that are more expensive. I ultimately do not know.
There are two things we can think about with these chips...
1. The provenance papers the current owner has shows that the previous owner acquired these in Feb 1981, so there’s no way they could be reproduced in the 90s.
2. Reproduced TRKs from the 90s typically did not have shaped inlays.
For example:
Kings Crown
possibly Jessie Beck's?
Why did Harrah's have 3 different TRKs in the 60s
There were hot stamped reproduced El Rancho Vegas chips with the same die "originally" used from the late 40s, early 50s. Not many hot stamped chips we could say. I'm sure we all know about the group buys that people did to get the Kings Crown hot stamped sets and chips along with the inlays. That is confirmed along with the "movie prop" chips that were made too.
I'm sure there are a few more, but that's my thinking. Anything that is in MINT condition and I MEAN MINT raises questions to me. I understand that there is a possibility that someone could have walked out of a casino with a brand new chip in their pocket from back then, but they have had to hold onto that or have a story to go along with it. The bad thing is that many of those collectors that could have possibly been around then may have already passed away and there isn't a way to get their stories told. I know there are plenty of them still around and I'd love to talk with them and document their stories soon.
