You don't have to "get it" to see that every modern communication platform (forum, bbs, social media, etc) has some type of single-click like/vote/heart button. In the case of Tinder, it's a single gesture - a swipe. It's an instantaneous and easy-to-use way for people who read a post (or look at a picture or video or ???) to give feedback. If you saw a thread here with 2 people debating an issue, and one debater is getting 50 likes and the other getting 2, wouldn't you infer that the person getting 50 likes has the overwhelming support of the group reading the posts? Of course you would. And isn't a single click as you scroll through a bunch of posts much easier than: clicking reply, erasing a subject line, replacing it with a line or image or some other form of kudos/support (or an emoji that represents a like, as David suggested earlier), (optionally) adding a note in the body of the reply, scrolling down, (optionally) clicking Preview, then clicking Post? Don't you think you'd get more people "voting" for thoughts they approve of, which should steer a board into taking action on that idea (assuming it's related to a board/club matter and not just a picture of an adorable puppy or something)? When I've asked certain members (through email) "Hey, did you see my post? Did you like it?", I've been told a number of times, "I was going to reply, but didn't [have | want to take] the time". Adding a like (or just using modern software like the one I implemented) takes care of that. Someone stating "a lot of us think..." should carry much less weight than the same "lot of us" individually showing their support for an idea. The current method for doing that is cumbersome. The new method is THE method of choice for billions of people around the world. It's time we joined the crowd. Keep in mind you're free to do nothing with the posts you read. No one is forcing you to vote on each and every post, so the impact to you of adding this feature is zero, zilch, nada. Leave the voting to those who do care. And I'm here to tell you, "a lot of people" like that idea.
