Doug, those are some solid thoughts on board structure and composition. Years ago, I served on the local board of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Board members were interested in facilitating mentorship’s between adults and kids from (mostly) what were called broken families. We were not allowed to be “Bigs”. Our job was to help fundraiser, guide the Exec Dir, and find people of varying talents to join the board to take advantage of those skills. Mine was technical expertise and budgeting/financial analysis (and joking around in meetings). I found a great CPA, then a marketing/promotions person (advertising), and before I left, a replacement for the tech side of things. We all offered different skills, and we all had varying levels of time commitments to the organization. But it worked and worked well. Age-wise, we were all across the board. Our oldest board member was 85+ and our youngest was probably 28-30. Anyway, thanks for participating here.
