Dick, I think I know what you are feeling as you satisfactorily step back from the microphone and sign off. My dad made 50 years working for the same railroad company. My goal was to match his milestone anniversary, but I fell a couple years short -- punched out as Vice President For News and Executive Editor of the state's 10th largest daily newspaper with 48 years service and a career's worth of accolades and honors I could not ever imagined. Being named a finalist for the Pulitzer was my highlight but agonize the writing of a story about the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy was one of the saddest days of my life. The entire staff wished me goodbye and thanks for the journey by letting me start the press-- the first and last endeavor as my official duty ended with all the reporters and sub-editors wishing me well. It's an emotional ride and fitting way to retire. You will know when your time comes, how deep down and grateful you are to be able to reach that Golden Anniversary with pride, but also an emotional farewell. Being in that high club deserves all the "Thanks" you will get for a job you truly loved and respected for a lifetime. I have been retired for over 15 years, and I still miss it. Congratulations, young man and keep chipping. I will still be your backup for collecting $1 chips in my area. Good luck and happiness ahead.
