Perhaps attempted cleaning with the wrong chemical

Bleach or some other strong cleaner started to attack the inlay covering? Not exactly suggesting you ruin another good chip in finding out - but if the same condition can be created with any chip - it's not a different variety but a damaged item. I know of several rabid $2.50 collectors who want EVERY type of snapper there is. Not fair to call it a different chip and get them all fired up over getting one!
