There was nothing there but a very, very large hole in the ground. I was there in 1967 and you could (and I did) walk all the way down to the center.

Now days, you can only walk the edge, but they have build a wonderful museum. If you are a hiker, you can do the rim, of stay in air conditioned comfort, with great viewing points.

Just a short drive East of Flagstaff.
