Re: Hey Doug...do you remember...

a shop in Bullhead City that was, I believe, named Whimsey's Collectibles?

This goes back a ways...maybe even the 1990's. I seem to remember that the owner's name was Katherine. She told us that she used to live in Las Vegas, and she and her husband were somehow connected to the Leaning Tower of Pizza. She was mugged one night and badly injured, and I believe she had to have brain surgery. She said that when they moved to Las Vegas there wasn't much money, so she used to go to all of the casinos and collect books of matches. When you walked into the store there were two wooden "treasure chests"...I think that at least one of them was from the Stardust. One chest was filled with casino collectibles, which were for sale...and I think that's where I found our two shovels. The other treasure chest was filled with binders of matches...which were NOT for sale, no matter what was offered! She was saving them for her son. She was telling me and George all this stuff, and we happened to have a postcard in the car, from the Leaning Tower of Pizza (I think we got it from Bill Akeman's store). We asked her if she wanted to see it, and she said YES! As I remember, when she saw it she almost started to cry...which she attributed to her brain injuries. She asked if we'd sell it to her. She had several casino collectibles that we were going to buy, so we made a trade for the postcard and bought the rest. Somehow one of the items was left out of our package (one of the shovels, I think!). I called the shop when we got back home and realized it was missing. She said she'd set it aside and was waiting to hear from us, then she mailed it to us.

The other thing I remember about the store is that there was casino carpeting there...I think from the Pioneer in Laughlin. But I don't remember if it was on the floor, or if it was for sale.

We were in the shop a few times, then on one of our trips the shop was closed and empty. I always wondered what happened to her, and whether her son kept all of those matches. I wish I'd carried a camera back in those days...some of those matches are probably pretty rare now!

LOL! Sorry about rambling on like that...I was trying to remember the name of the shop, and remembered everything else first! grin (Disclaimer: these memories are decades old, so they could be a little off...but as of today, this is what I remember happening)
