I agree with Paul on this one, though it could also be some collectors acting in collusion to drive up the price, much like the silver spike in coins back in the 80's. It could even be new collectors coming into the hobby who remember the times they spent as a kid at Circus Circus. (I mean those chips are 30yo.)

Really, who knows what suddenly drives prices of collectibles up or down.
