Burt, the 90 year old attorney (former Federal Prosecutor) that I work for. He remembered the ranch and correctly said (without any prompts on my part) there was an eminent domain proceeding to take it from Pancho. He was working for the Federal government toward the end of the Barnes matter (I guess just about when the ranch burned) but not actively involved in the affair. Apparently Happy Bottom was the stuff of lunchtime talk among the Feds back in the 50's. Mount Lowe north of Pasadena is named for Thaddeus Lowe, Pancho's balloon-flying father. But, no, Burt has no chips from Oro Verde Dude Ranch (the official name for Happy Bottom Riding Club) and knows nothing about gambling on the premises.
