Years ago when our kids were young we took them from Vegas to see the Grand Canyon. We just get a few miles past Hoover dam and Cindy decides that she has to go to the bathroom. Does not sound like a big deal but here we were out in the middle of nowhere. I see a sign that says there is a town (or maybe a gas station) 5 miles to the right. So we go. Only thing the sign did not say was that it was 5 miles downhill. After 30 minutes of going down thru the switchbacks we visit the bathroom and head back. Of course it was about 120 degrees that day and the drive was all uphill. I get about 200 yards from the main highway when the car starts bucking because the engine is over heating. That was a scary time since there was little traffic on the main road and the heat was just unbearable. Of course being "foreigners" we were not prepared with lots of onboard water either. Fortunately my little AMC rental managed to make it up the rest of the hill without dying completely and the rest of the trip was fine. (Although the Grand Canyon is still just a large hole in the ground.)
