Old race books in LV long gone they

would set odds on the big races for future bets. Not tied into track odds like today. My buddy had a big bet on a long shot, he lost by a nose. Sammy Cohen said if that horse won he would be out of business and broke. Ferdinand ridden by Shoemake won by a nose in 1986. The racebook was across from the Dunes. Charlie Whittingham was the trainer, and often a leading win's at So. Cal meetings. One day in the barn area I asked Mr. Whittingham if he had any tips today. He told me I'll give you the best tip of your life. I was excited, he then said DON'T BET ON THE HORSES. I wish I had listened to him, I lived In Arcadia 5 minutes from Santa Anita went Sat & Sun., You can't beat the races, a bookie's dream would be taking bets from the jockeys in the Jockeys room. Owners are prejudiced. Anyone can get lucky now and then but not in the long run.
