There is a doctrine in maritime law regarding collisions at sea that seemingly fits here - -"both to blame". One tried to take advantage of an unknowledgeable seller and the other seems a bit too pious.

Both are right and wrong IMO. Why not let Archie referee - he's good at dispute resolution & is sharp as a marble!
