Finally received a new addition to my boxing chip collection. I think this will be the last.
The fight was Tyson vs. McNeeley. August 19, 1995. MGM Grand Las Vegas. This was Tyson's first fight after being released from prison. He had served three years for rape. The fight only lasted 89 seconds, and was considered a disqualification. Tyson dropped McNeeley about 10 seconds into the fight. Less than 20 seconds later, Tyson landed a right uppercut that knocked McNeeley down again. His manager rushed into the ring to stop the fight, causing referee to call it a DQ.
These were the first Mike Tyson chips issued. The official releases were a $25 and a $100.
I love how this was McNeeley's 15 minutes of fame, and they spelled his name wrong!!
The interesting part is the never released $10 chip. The stories I have been told is that Tyson or Don King didn't like the image, or that they were not thrilled with the $10 denomination.
I now have three examples of the $10 chip.
This is the one I just added:
Current thought is that it was just a "paste up prototype". Inlay affixed and pressed on by hand, presumably as someone needed to see it 'same day' rather than waiting a week or two for a sample from Mexico. I have never seen another.
The second was the Paulson sample made for the chip. TCR #V6918. All of these are notched.
The "holy grail" of boxing chips is this one. Apparently these chips were in production when the notice to destroy was issued. Only two or three ever made it out alive. TCR #V6917.
I know of a few of these out there - there is one currently on on - (not mine) of the chip labels just waiting to get affixed to chips.
