Hey Tyler,
The one thing I will tell people: be very specific about what you want to collect. There are so many out there, you can get frustrated (and spend a lot of money) getting "everything".
You mentioned you like vintage chips, you should consider narrowing down to ones before a specific time. Or only for LV and only a certain denomination. So if you focus on LV $5 before 1980, you will still have a lot to collect. But if you say "anything, anywhere, any denomination before 1980", you'll go bankrupt.
You'll see a lot of people on the board focus on an area, denomination, manufacturer, etc.
Also: if you decide to specialize on NV or LV chips, be sure to get a copy of The Chip Rack from Spragg (http://www.thechiprack.com/), it will help you understand general prices so you know what you are getting into. Pair that with the Chip Guide (http://www.chipguide.com/) and you have a great start!
Enjoy the hobby!
