When I was asked to get more competitive bids for the printing and mailing of the magazine we got what was basically the cheapest we could get with it still being color. As a matter of fact, the was no difference in printing it in color or black and white. And as far as quantities, we were at the very minimum. We would get no cost savings in printing a fewer number of copies. So basically we would be printing half the amount, but paying the same.
There was a thought that if we had members select wether they wanted the electronic version, or a mailed copy, we could then save on postage. Which would be substantial IF enough people chose the electronic delivery. But it was estimated that most of the current members would want the hard copy.
Also, this may be a minor sticking point, but way back when I was doing that magazine I used to get a lot of photos from libraries and museums. Those libraries and museums all made me sign usage agreements. Those agreements stated that they would be used only in print, and for educational usage. They mentioned they DO NOT want the photos on the web, because then they are copied and distributed. That is why I am having a issue with putting some of the articles I did on-line.
Part of what I thought would be a cool idea is to make the magazine articles with links to "additional content available on our club website" where if you were a club member to could log onto our website, enter a password and then go to the magazine section. The main part of the magazine would be available to anyone who surfs onto our site free of charge, but the club members would have access to additional photos and information. I always had lots of extra photos and chip, token, trinket images that I could not fit in the printed magazine. So I thought it would be a great benefit for paying club members to "get more" for their dues.
I hope the printed magazine continues. It is such a cool way to preserve and pass on. I would hate to see it be electronic only.
Cheers everyone!
