Some of you may recall that around July I posted about moving to a new server due to hard disk issues.
For a number of reasons that never happened. Incompatible new operating system (resolved in the past few days after 4 months), other things happening in my life (ie too busy) and the fact I'm managing to keep the old box going even though it needs frequent restarts (like when people can't post - because the disk has hit a bad sector).
So this has cost me a bit as the server company only gave me the new box free for 3 months and here I am still almost 3 months later with box servers.
During the next few days the bb's may be down temporarily (will still display the maintenance screen) as I copy things across for testing and updating. (Yes, if anyone noticed I did take it down for 20 minutes about a half hour ago to copy the 1.2million archive posts).
When the actual move happens there maybe a temporary 'loss of service' while DNS resolves itself, although this shouldn't be for long as the boxes are next to each other so to speak, just different IP addresses.
Theoretically old cookies will still work etc. and most people may not even know it has moved. However I can't plan for every combination of modern browser nor individuals' security settings, so if anyone gets an 'insecure website' warning in their browser, just ignore it and access the site. Should be good from then on.
Would have been nice to move to https and avoid those issues but sadly the way old data is stored would mean all past links (including to images etc.) would die.
In any event, the new server supposedly has built in IP blocking for bots (which I can manually edit if someone gets locked out) and a firewall to block any harvesting software and it's an SSD disk rather than old physical type.
Anyone gets stuck just email me. I'll post here a short while before the live switch. Also I'll get the 'trouble forum' up and running first so that anyone can get urgent messages across.
