First , this is my opinion. It is not the Gospel ! It is worth what you paid for it .
I agree that young people do not value history the way most of the people on this site do. That makes it very hard to bring new young people into any kind of collecting of something that they do not use daily. I would have to say that chip collecting of just single chips is much harder to get a new person interested in. I straddle the fence of the set collectors and the single chip collectors. I have noticed that most set collectors become singles collectors as well over time, but singles collectors do not seem to migrate to set collecting. Poker set collecting has continued steady growth . In my opinion , it would be smart for the CCA to reach out to the set collecting community with a "Special membership offer". The reason I say this, is that, if you track the membership on www.pokerchipforum.com , you will see the expansion of collectors almost daily. The current active membership on that site is 6,405. Over 800 members have been active on that site in the past 24 hrs. I had mentioned this site a couple years back at convention to leadership . At that time, there were less than 4000 members on that site. The site membership is free , so its not an apples to apples comparison of the CCA membership numbers. As with the CCA, there are all levels of budgets that I have seen from the membership. I can say that I have seen set collectors spending a significant amount of money on chips and continually expanding their collections of sets and singles. As with any club, potential members have to share an interest in the topic and see value the club brings. I believe the average person on that site is unaware of the CCA resources and the membership knowledge that can be shared. Somehow those 6000 casino chip collectors need to become aware of what the club has to offer and then make a decision if they want to become members. The one negative I have heard from some of those guys on that site is that they were greeted with "oh you are one of those set collectors" with a negative tone. I would say to guard against that perception and there is opportunity to expand the hobby and the CCA.
Thanks,
