During the period of 1st World War , Lisbon became a city of fun and unruled pleasure. Some magnificent and luxurious casinos were opened. Several clubs were established down town, the most commercial and most social life area of the capital, some of which in luxurious palaces. This illicit activity was only possible with the connivance of the police department, which closed its eyes in Exchange of some special favours . This was only achieved in late 1927, with gambling regulations , defining specific gambling areas -thermal and beach zones and no longer in the cities. The Majestic Club was opened in 1919, owned by Julio Cezar Rezende, wich would be later businessman in various casinos, such as Madeira, Figueira da Foz and Espinho. For installation of Majestic Club, was rent a mansion in the current Rua das Portas de Santo Antão, at the time named Rua Eugénio dos Santos. The mansion will be refurbished to Hispano- Arab style. Majestic was one of the largest and most luxurious clubs in Lisbon, had all the amenities , possessing restaurant, barber shop, cigar shop, reading room, toilette, bridge room, private rooms, and, obviously the gambling rooms.Due to rampant crackdown on gambling, Majestic Club, had a short-lived, ending around 1920, In late 1920, the club reopens with a new name, Monumental Club, which would closed in 1928.In the building of the club is now installed the Casa do Alentejo.( from CHIPGUIDE)
