There was some cheating but I think the main reason coins were replaced is that the labor for the coin runners was exorbitant. Just think - every time your $10 in quarters ran out you had to call someone to get another roll. Today you can stick $100 in the machine and play a lot longer and then just stick another $100 in. No wonder I don't play slots.
