Baron Long, owner of 2 Indian Reservations

It's a "long" story - you want a shorter one? - Research Viscount Short or somebody!

The Baron Long Group of Capitan Grande Band of Mission Indians (phew!) ended up buying his horse ranch east of Alpine, California; the ranch lands are still there but most people come today for the Outlet Stores and to gamble at the Viejas Casino. "Welcome to Viejas, and Goooood Luck."

Another nearby band of Indians were happily living beside a creek when the government decided that it needed a new reservoir to meet San Diego's growing water needs. The Indians were booted out in 1932 (booot!!!) and chose to live on another nearby Baron Long property which was available (guess the Baron wasn't making much money ranching in 1932). And that's why if you want to gamble at another big San Diego casino, you go to . . . BARONA.
