Brazil- Copacabana Casino

The Copacabana Palace Hotel was built by businessman Octávio Guinle and Francisco Castro Silva between 1919 and 1923, at the request of the then president of Brazil Epitácio Pessoa who wanted a large tourism hotel in the then capital of the country, to help host the large number of visitors expected for the great Exposition of the Centenary of Independence of Brazil to be held in 1922. In compensation, the Federal Government would grant tax incentives, as well as the license to operate a casino - a requirement of the businessman.
For the execution of the project, the French architect Joseph Gire was hired, who was inspired by two famous hotels on the French Riviera: the Negresco, in Nice, and the Carlton, in Cannes. However, the hotel only opened on August 13, 1923, almost one year after the Centennial Exhibition. This was due to the difficulties in importing marbles and crystals and in the execution of their foundations); the lack of technology and experience in the country for such production; and a violent storm that, in 1922, destroyed Avenida Atlântica, causing damage to the lower floors of the hotel.
