The Way It Was: Max C's Deli - NCR

For a number of years starting in the mid-1980's almost every trip to Vegas involved a walk from my strip hotel room to downtown and then a bus ride back. Parts of the walk were pretty seedy but I never had any trouble. I would wander around the site of the El Rancho Vegas where you could still see curbs outlining the driveways of the place. Then there was Stupak's weirdly fascinating Vegas World. All the motels that had hourly rates. Etc. Etc. Every walk involved a stop at Max C's deli. Max was the nastiest most complainiest person I've ever met although he never gave any indication that he remembered me. Depending on the time of day I would either get coffee and a danish or else a pastrami sandwich. But the real purpose was to rest near the end of the walk and spend about an hour listening to Max rant about everything. Lots of his customers were politicians, lawyers, judges etc. and Max had something to say about everything. He died in 2002. Here's an obituary from the LV Sun.
