It was in fact lying in the intersection of Main Street and North Broadway in White Plains, NY. (Funny how I can remember stuff 50 years old but not where I'm supposed to be going today.) Since Great Coin Rarities are pretty much never found in the intersection of two busy streets, my thought is that someone removed the final digit in some manner (tap die or some such tool) and then tried to pass it off as a rarity. Having no success at that, they simply tossed the coin out of their car and went on their merry way. I also once found a "$100 bill" about 98% of regulation size, on another White Plains street. Ahhh, White Plains, home of Cervezas Mexicanas and phoney money!
