CASINOS IN SPAIN

OLD TIMES- CASINO DEL SARDINERO- SANTANDER

Gambling in Spain had been banned, at least theoretically since 1922. The ban is an initiative of Minister Primo de Rivera.
Only after Caudillo Franco's death in 1975 did the situation change. The decriminalization of games of chance came into force in 1977, by Royal decree of 25 February.
On February 16, 1978, the first 18 concessions were awarded. Of these 18, the first to open doors was the Nuevo Gran Casino Kursaal in San Sebastian and the last the Casino Gran Madrid, in Torrelodones. Of these eighteen casinos, only the Monte Blancos, Peralada and Gran Madrid Casinos were located in the interior of the country. All others were located on the coast
Some casinos have since closed (eg Casino Montes Blancos, Casino del Mar Menor) and others have opened (see map below).
Others have been replaced, whether or not changing locations- Casino Admiral Aljarafe in Seville replaced Casino Aljarafe, in the same location, but changing the chips. Another example the Gran Casino de Murcia Orenes replaced the Gran Casino de Murcia - located at the Hotel Rincon de Pepe, changing locations and chips.
Some casinos have opened branches, such as Casino Mediterraneo. Another curious case is that of Casino La Toja (a small village), whose owners have always tried unsuccessfully to transfer it to Vigo, the provincial capital. It is now planned to open a branch of Casino de La Toja in Vigo (interestingly, the casino's euro tokens never had the name of the location, but only the CIRSA owner, perhaps thinking about transferring location). Casino Castilla Leon has opened a branch in Valladolid, Casino Roxy - in this case we are still unable to confirm whether the chips have changed.
The map below indicates Spain's casinos in 2017.
The following table already includes the casinos that later opened, for example the Casino Granada ( 2019) or the Gran Casino de Murcia Orenes (2020).
We only register the casinos that operated after the Euro came into force (1 January 1999).
