A FRENCH CASINO GAME

LES PETITS CHEVAUX

August 21. Louis-Gustave Binant applied for a patent for a toy called “courses de salon” (salon racing) which was intended for family use. But it was quickly used as a kind of roulette with a table of bets. Put into service first faith on 1875 in a gambling room in Trouville.” PETITS CHEVAUX” (Small horses) were prohibited the following year, then tolerated thereafter before the protest of bathers. His success was immense.
When the French parliament voted in 1907 to regularize the houses of chance games, the official casinos offered only a few games, including that of small horses.
“Le Jeu des Petits Chevaux” ( The game of small horses) is a device comprising, at the top of a box, nine ( originaslly) to twelve circular rails in which are inserted figurines of race. Launched by a random effect resort placed in the box, the horses travel around the circumference more or less quickly and gradually stop.
The small horses after having made several turns around the center, stop at distances more or less from a point called BUT ( Goal).
The horse which arrives closest to the BUT ( Goal), without however exceeding it, is deemed to be the winner.
The game originally had 8 horses.
The player who bought a ticket with the number corresponding to that of the winning horse, receives in exchange for this ticket 7 francs if he paid 1 franc and 14 francs if he played 2 francs.
Become very popular in casinos, the game of small horses was not always very reliable, the mechanism can be stopped.

LE JEU DE LA BOULE
Gradually, it was replaced by a version of “La BOULE “ with new compariments (A KIND OF ROULETTE with only 9 numbers and a bigger ball).
In 1904, the house of JOST in Paris created the game “LA BOULE” which it initially sold under the name of “BILLARD PETITS CHEVAUX”. The name LA BOULE became official in 1920 in a decree of the French State.

A table, a play mat, a slightly curved cylindrical table with a crown formed by two groups of 9 numbers ranging from number 1 to number 9 and a ball are the elements of the game of LA BOULE.
All bets that have been played on the number released are paid seven times the bet, plus the one (the first bet) which remains the property of the player. All winning bets that correspond to equality groups are paid once per bet, plus the bet itself. We will speak of simple bet when we bet on an equality group.
Note that the number 5 is paid like the other figures, that is to say seven times the mse plus the initial bet. On the other hand, leaving the number 5 will cause all the bets played on the tie groups to be lost; it therefore makes lose all simple chances.

Practice and rules of the game of the Ball
The ball game ( BOULE )is played standing upright on the table. A croupier throws a ball and manages the game on the table. At the start of the game, the dealer asks the players to bet announcing “Gentlemen make your bets”. The player himself places his bets on numbers 1 to 9 or on so-called egality groups (Black / Red, Even / Odd and - Manque- Passe (Lack / Pass)
The numbers 1,3,7 and 9 are odd, while 2, 4, 6 and 8 are even. The numbers 1,3,6,8 are black, while 2,4,7 and 9 are red, the numbers 1,2,3 and 4 are MISSED, while 6,7, 8 and 9 are passed. The number 5 is not even, odd, pass, red, or black.
The dealer then announces “The games are made” before judging if all the games are marked and sending the ball. The dealer ends with the declaration “Nothing goes more” which specifies that the displacement of the bets is no longer possible.
The cylinder systematically alternates red and black boxes. Note that, unlike the game of Roulette with 36 numbers, the numbers are not distributed in order to minimize the proximity of the equality groups. For example, the numbers “missing” and “passing” are grouped on the cylinder.
When the ball stops in one of the cups of the cylinder, the croupier announces the number which left, as well as (except for the number 5) the three groups of agality to which this number belongs. For example; 2, red, even and missing.
The game of “LA BOULE” remains very popular in France, playing in most French casinos.
