DIEPPE – 5 casinos from 1822, in its life

Dieppe is a coastal community in the Arrondissement of Dieppe in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region of northern France.
DIEPPE , besides the provisional casinos immediatly after WWII, had 5 casinos.

1- FIRST CASINO 1822- 1857
Dieppe had established a luxurious Bains de Mer complex , which opened on 1 May 1822. This property can be considered the first casino in Dieppe, because there was already gambling.
The first casino was established in 1822 thanks to the Count of Brancas, sub-prefect of the city. A luxurious Etablissement des Bains de mer was therefore built in 1822. To finance it, the Société Annonyme of the Etablissement de Mer in the city of Dieppe offered for sale 400 shares of 500 francs.

2- SECOND CASINO 1857-1886
In 1857, a new casino with vaults and glass roofs was built on the model of the great glass palaces of international exhibitions. This second casino marks the splendid period of sea bathing on the great Normandy beaches. When the season comes, all of Parisian and foreign high society flock to the beaches. The racetrack, the theater and especially the casino become the centers of this summer life.

3- THIRD CASINO 1886-1926
In 1886 a new Moorish-style casino was inaugurated, built on the initiative of Mr. Durville, being director Isidore Bloch.
The new casino is opened from summer 1886, named CASINO MAURESQUE ( Moorish Casino ).
At the start of the 20th century, Dieppe was at its peak. It was until 1914 the first seaside resort in France frequented by King Leopold II of Belgium, the Duke of Westminster,, Claude Monet…
Rivale of Trouville-sur-Mer, Cabourg or Le Touquet. Dieppe was also at this time a renowned seaport

The new casino Art Deco will replace Mauresque.
WWII- the casino turned into a military hospital for English.
The city is then particularly marked by the Second World War.
. From May 11 to 14, 1940, Dieppe underwent the first German bombardments then on June 9, 1940, after several bombings of the Luftwaffe, the Wehrmacht entered Dieppe. The city was bombed by the RAF from August. On October 20, 1941, Dieppe, like all the coastal municipalities, was classified as a "prohibited coastal zone".
On August 19, 1942, the Allies attempted a first unsuccessfull landing at Dieppe, composed of mainly Canadian troops (Operation Jubilee).
The landing will be June 6, 1944.
Following this raid, the German army proceeded to destroy the hotels and several properties on the seafront and the coast where the Allies had landed in order to remove any shelter that could serve as protection for another landing.
The casino de Dieppe will be totally destroyed during WWII.
On September 1, 1944, Dieppe was liberated by land and without fighting, the Germans having abandoned their positions before the advance of the Allied troops.
Transformed into a minefield, the beach of Dieppe was almost inaccessible for ten years.

5- PERIOD AFTER WWII- FIFTH CASINO
After the war, from 1946 to 1961, temporary wooden casinos or the Villa Rachel on the seafront served as a replacement casino.
