In 1962 gambling in general passed to the control of S.T.D.M.( Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau) which signed the exclusivity gambling's contract with Macanese Government in 1962, March 30th. Although this contract was legally signed in above mentioned date, truth is, gambling's franchise began in 1st January 1962 in a improved area, where Hotel Estoril is nowadays installed.
The concession contract signed between STDM and the Macanese Government in June 1962, was subsequently extend until 2001.
In 2001, the enactement of Law number 16/2001 The Legal Framework for the Operation of Games of Fortune has bought enormous innovations to the gaming industry.
To increase market competition and atttractiveness of the Macau gaming industry, the Macau Government gave a maximum of 3 gaming licenses. This act of liberalization of the gaming industry, formally eliminated the monopolistic operation of Macau casino gambling given to STDM. The monopoly was over. The casino industry has been controlled by STDM monopoly for 39 years.
On 8 February 2002, the Tender Committee promulgated the 3 companies that were granted the gaming concession: SOCIEDADE DE JOGOS DE MACAU (SJM), WYNN RESORTS (Macau) S.A. and GALAXY CASINO, S.A.

SJM substitutes STDM
All casinos in Macau under STDM control, used tokens and chips (European and American styles) indistinctly in the several casinos. The SJM have used STDM chips until 2005, when SJM chips and jetons were issued.

The major shareholders of SJM are STDM and Stanley Ho, who signed na 18-year gaming concession contract on the 28 March 2002, which is valid from April 2002 to 31th March 2020. Basically SJM (Macau Gambling Company) would continue to use the existing casinos belonging to STDM ( Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau) , which was beneficial to Macau's overall interests and also for the development of Macau gaming industry. In those days there were 11 STDM casinos.
The concessionaire is permitted to operate games of luck in casinos or other forms, in the following eleven locations: Casino Lisboa, Casino Jai Alai, Casino Oriental, Casino Kingsway, Casino Diamond, Casino Taipa, Clube VIP Legend, Casino Marina, Casino New Century, Casino Kam Pek and Casino Macau Palace. The number of casinos and their locations are subjected to review five years later the establishment of the contract. The concessionaire is obligated to fulfil the projected investment of 4.737.480.000 patacas. In fact STDM operations never stopped. The 11 STDM goes operating under the name of SJM and using STDM chips, until the issuing of SJM chips.
In January 2003 SJM opened the Pharaoh's Palace in Landmark Hotel. On October 2nd 2004 the MJC Casino Grand View opened in Grand View Hotel .On January 21st 2004 the Casino Casa Real opened in Hotel Casa Real. On December 23 2004 the Casino Greek Mythology opened in New Century Hotel. In January 2005 the Golden Dragon opened and also in 2005 the Grand Empereur Casino opened..SJM like the others concessionaires gave sub-concessions to other companies. SJM has built also the Grand Lisboa, near to Casino Lisboa, which will be the SJM jewel, like was the Casino Lisboa was for STDM for more than 25 years. This mega casino was opened on February 11, 2007. Casino Oceanus opened on December 15, 2009, in the location of the former Jai Alai Casino. Casino Cais 16 opened on February 2, 2008 .With the opening of Cais 16 , SJM had then 19 casinos.

Casino Hotel Legend Palace – the latest property from Hong Kong-listed casino services firm Macau Legend Development Ltd – opened to the public on February 27, 2017. The 223-room Legend Palace (pictured) would launch with up to 66 live-dealer gaming tables, with at least 46 of them earmarked for mass play. Around 46 mass tables, plus 11 self-run VIP tables, would opened during the grand opening period. The casino had a plans to open three junket-promoted VIP rooms at a later stage. Macau Legend does not hold Macau table quota in its own right, but instead had rely on the quota of one of the existing Macau casino operators. It currently collaborates with SJM Holdings Ltd. Legend Palace is the second new hotel under a redevelopment plan for Macau Fisherman's Wharf. The first, Harbourview, opened in February 2015 but does not have gaming.Macau Legend currently runs previuosly two casinos in Macau: the Babylon Casino at Macau Fisherman's Wharf and Pharaoh's Palace Casino at the Landmark Macau casino hotel, under SKM sub concession.. The company currently had 179 gaming tables. The casino uses SJM HKDchips with its own logo ( LP ).MOP chips are similar from those used by SJM.

The hotel casino is owned by China Star Entertainment Group Ltd, a Hong Kong- listed producer of films , which links to Macau casino junket industry. The casino hotel,formerly Kingsway Hotel, was opened in 2009, after renovation. Besides the ground floor,located in the 18th floor of the hotel there are 8 VIP gaming rooms. The casino is operated under a SJM ( Sociedade de Jogos de Macau) license.

The MGM Gran Paradise , a society owned by MGM Mirage and Pansy Ho, a Stanley Ho´s daughter, have payed to SJM, 200 million USD for a sub-concession. The first MGM Grand Casino, was opened in 2007, December 18.

After several announcements of opening and postponement, the casino opened on February 13, 2018

In 2009 Lam’s Jimei Group actually took control of a “satellite casino” under SJM’s concession, managing the casino at the Grand Lapa Hotel (formerly the “Casino Oriental” at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel).

The company signed a 20-year gaming concession contract, with contact valid from 27 June 2002 to 26 June 2022. According the contract the concessionaire will pay to the government 35% of the Gross Income, 1,6% of gross casino revenue to a public foundation for the promotion of cultural, social, etc,activities, an annual payment 2,4% of the gross casino revenue for urban development. In addition , is also obligated to a fixed premium of 30 billion patacas starting from June 2005 or the openning day of their first casino, plus a variable premium acording the number of gaming tables and slot machines. The major shareholders are the Venetian from US Nevada, Lui Chee Woo family and Ho Ou Chun. Galaxy has opened the first casino, the Galaxy Casino Waldo on 4 July 2004. And has opened three more casinos on 2006, the Galaxy Rio (on 22 February), Galaxy President ( on 29 April) and Galaxy Grand Waldo (on 22 May ), and, one more, the Star World on 2006, September 29. Galaxy Macau has opened on 05.15.2011.



Galaxy Macau is a resort located on the Cotai Strip, Macau, China. Construction on the Cotai project began in 2002. Galaxy Macau resort officially opened on 15 May 2011. Above the gaming area have 52,000 square metres resort, with gardens, six swimming pools, including a wave pool and an artificial beach, hotels Galaxy, Banyan Tree and Okura. The total área of the resort was 0,5 million square meters. Fort the second phase opened in May 27, 2015 ,JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels were be added to the Cotai resort. The hotels of the resort have about 4000 rooms, and the total área was doubled to more than 1,1 million square meters.


VENETIAN MACAU / SANDS On 23 December 2002, was made a significant amendment on the concession Galaxy contract ( Galaxy is one of the three concessionaires of Macau gambling) , and with the aproval of the macanese government, the Galaxy Casino signed a sub concession contract with the Venetian Macau and mutually pledge to equally share the 8,8 billion patacas investment in Macau. The Galaxy would began operating independently from Venetian. The first casino from Venetian, the Sands Macau opened in May 18, 2004, with 277 gaming tables and 405 slot machines. Las Vegas Sands Inc. has built a mega casino, the biggest in the world,called Venetian Cotai, wich remenber Venice, with canals, gôndolas, singing gondoliers, and other baroque Venice icons.The casino was openned on 2007, August 28.In 08.28.2009 Venetian opened the Casino Plaza at Four Seasons Hotel that use the same chips from Venetian. Sands have exclusive chips .The Venetian use different chips than Sands.

Casino Sands Cotai Central, belonging to US casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, made its grand opening in Macau's Cotai district on April 11, 2012. The US$4.4 billion complex is the last major development project for the special administrative region for the next couple of years. The new casino is the third Sands property in Macau after the Venetian Macao and Plaza Macao. The Sands Cotai Central will boast more than 500 gaming tables and 40 VIP rooms for big spenders once it is fully opened and there are plans to build a 3,600-room resort nearby if the project is approved by the local government. The Parisian is a luxury hotel in Cotai, owned by Las Vegas Sands, which has a half-scale Eiffel Tower as one its landmarks. The hotel officially opened on 13 September 2016.

WYNN RESORTS MACAU S.A. This company signed a 20 year gaming concession contract on 24 June 2002, wich is valid from 27 June 2002 to 26 June 2022. The major share holders are the american Steve Wynn and Wong Chi Seng, another major shareholder is the japanese slot producer, Kazuo Okada. By contract the concessionaire is obligated to invest at least about 513 million USD ( 4 billion patacas) over the next 7 years and its first casino must open no later than 2006. The Wynn began the buiding of his hotel casino tower in 2004, the Wynn Casino, that was openned to the public on 2006, September 6.


Wynn sold it for 900 million USD, a sub-concession to a company, which major shareholders the australian P.B.L. and the MELCO (a Macau company owned by Lawrence, one of Stanley Ho´son). The first Melco PBL casino, the Crown Macau has opened on 2007,May 12. Melco PBL Entertainment change this designation to Melco Crown Gaming ( Macau) Ltd, in 2008, Juin. Crown Macau has changed the name to Casino Altira, on 04.27.2009. Melco has opened Casino Taipa Square in 06.12.2008 , and City of Dreams in the 06.01.2009.
