MONTE CARLO- study on jetons and plaques

1-Before WW1, gambling was played in Monte Carlo " l'or et l'argent " ( with gold and silver) with coins and banknotes in circulation.
The only notes issued in the principality are emergency notes put into circulation in 1920, so it can be concluded that the franc banknotes used at the gaming tables were French.

“From Almanach Illustré Monaco et Monte Carlo- 1894 “

“A bundle of banknotes is placed on the carpet… .This up to the maximum means that if the player puts eight or ten thousand franc notes on roulette….”

MONACO COINS- “In 1878, 20 francs gold coins were struck in the effigy of Charles III, soon followed by 100 francs coins. In 1889 Alber I succeeded his father; gold coins of 100 francs bearing his effigy were given in 1891, 1895 and 1896.
THESE COINS ARE LESS INTENDED TO BE USED AS CURRENCIES THAN GAMBLING JETONS FOR MONTE CARLO CASINO ”

“From Almanach Illustré Monaco et Monte Carlo- 1894 “- MONTE CARLO croupier. With a coin ( seems to be a 5 french coin Franc – jetons not used on those times)

2-The 2 Francs JETON
The minimum bet on roulette in 1865, on the opening date of the casino, was 2 francs, a coin that did not existed in Monaco.
François Blanc issued silver jetons of 2 francs, as mentioned in some literature at the time and reproduced below.

“In Monaco, the administration struck silver jetons which replaced the forty-cent coin, and which even circulated as currency throughout the principality. On one side we read: CASINO DE MONACO, on the other: JETON DE DEUX FRANCS.
Mr. Blanc makes money, like the great sovereigns of Europe ”

“Silver jetons , have a nominal value of 2 francs, and an intrinsic value of 1 franc 75 cents, were issued by the Director. These jetons, which have the double advantage of paper and money, quickly acquired active circulation, not only in the principalityof Monaco, but also in Menton, a French city where this desired sign out of a gambling house is mix with the coins struck with your efigie (note – FRANCE EMPEROR). Thanks to this financial expedient, an ever-increasing number of players are attracted to the green carpet, because people who have come to change this currency find it difficult to resist the temptation to deliver it to the fortune of the game. ”

“These jetons minted in Paris Coin Mint, numbered 200,000. However, one day when Mr. White, after the war, checked it, he found 300,000 in the fund, 100,000 more than he had. Compared to this discovery, the multiplication of loaves in the desert became a simple amusement. We looked for the origin of this unexpected reproduction and we found it above Monte Carlo, in La Turbie, where a counterfeiters factory was discovered.
That day, the jetons WERE RETIRED, and the minimum at roulette was raised from two francs to five francs, while that of the thirty and forty was raised from five francs to 1 louis ”
WE CAN CONCLUDE that the 2-franc silver jetons were issued in 1865 and WITHDRAWN on a date prior to 1894 (date of the publication mentioned above)
We are surprised that the references of the jetons registered by these publications do not coincide with the inscriptions of the jetons.
So the two publications say
Obverse-CASINO DE MONACO
Reverse -JETON DE DEUX FRANCS
Not exactly of the two variations of the jetons says

3- After WW1, return to tokens and plaques. ( it seems jetons and plaques should be used in the 1870´s ??)
The Casino de Monte Carlo provided these customers with playing plaques which they replaced as coins on the tables.

These plaques were carved in mother-of-pearl, finely worked and curved, beautifully made. However, their lifespan was very short due to the fragility of the material.
In addition, these jetons and plaques were subject to forgery.
One day in 1925, Claude Grasset reads in the newspaper that a player broke the bank of the Monte-Carlo casino by counterfeiting plaques with shavings of ivory and mother-of-pearl. This news immediately gives him an idea. For the next two years, he has been working with Etienne Bourgogne, a lithographer by trade, experimenting with the use of plastic in pins or playing cards. The two partners offer their skills to develop plaques whose value, traditionally engraved, will now be printed and trapped in a thin layer of plastic to prevent imitation.
This is why from 1927 SBM has replaced the old jetons and plaques by synthetic jetons and plaques produced by the Société Bourgone and Grasset.

Pieces for the manufacture of plaques

In 1930, B&G "offered" the first jeton with a “ lunette(eye); at the start of the 1930s, it "offered" plaques with a small striated safety rectangle, on which "stamps" were glued . Every day the stamp was removed and a new different one was glued.
Since then, the latter has supported Monte-Carlo SBM and designed all the chips and dice at the group's casinos.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Monte-Carlo Societé de Bains de Mer, on 2013 10000 “Vintage” plaques were published, reproducing the first version of 1927 identically. Each numbered and with limited distribution. Made by Bourgogne & Grasset Gaming Partners International
