She was a performer who lost and lost and lost.

...and she made huge amounts of money on stage at the casino and gave most of it back each night after her performance... and, to add on to that... her son was also a gambler who she had to cover for.

She is Sarah Bernhardt and the casino was at Monte-Carlo.

The nacre has nothing to do with the casino... and is simply part of a group of photos from Christian CARO, who sent them to the author of "Casinos" in the 1980's...though, the large "Dix Mille francs" plaques have since been in Robert Eisenstadt's and my collection... and I'll gladly give a thousand bucks for that ovale from Nice.
