On a bright, sunny afternoon in May, 1963 I walked into our local record store in Syracuse, New York to make a momentous purchase...
I had saved up my allowance and was about to buy the first 45 rpm records of my life. Having listened to rock, pop and soul music for the
previous couple years on WNDR Radio, I was quite familiar with the Top 40 sounds of the day and finally ready to start a record collection.
I sifted through several 45's that afternoon including "Pipeline" by The Chantays, "Puff The Magic Dragon" by Peter, Paul & Mary, "Another
Saturday Night" by Sam Cooke, and "I Will Follow Him" by Little Peggy March - but finally settled on two records: "Surfin' USA" by The Beach
Boys and "Da Doo Ron Ron" by The Crystals (with "wall of sound" production by Phil Spector) - still two of my favorite tunes from those innocent,
early days of Top 40/rock & roll.
