There is more involved and not just a metal plate; rubber mats/rollers are part of the equipment used in the process where, the impression on the metal plate is transferred to the rubber which comes in contact with the media (in this case paper) and the media can shift as well in the process which can cause the poor registration. The metal plates never touch the paper.
