I came across these interesting "Ivory" items at a flea market a few weeks ago and I just had to have them !! These are Masonic related Commemorative Gavels from the 1920s - 1940s which were presented to members of the O. E. S. (Order of the Eastern Star) a charitable organization related to the Free Masons - similar to the Shiners. These gavels are around 8 to 9 inches long. I had never seen these Gavels before.
Back in the 1980s, prior to collecting Chips I had a very large collection of all kinds of Ivory carving. I sold all the Ivory items back in the early 1990s when the owning of Ivory items became unpopular because of the killing of elephants for their Ivory tusks.
These are the only Ivory items I currently own except for my collection of Ivory chips.
Has anyone else seen these Gavels before or collect them ??
Take care,
Jerry
