Construction crews put out smudge pots at night to mark open trenches on roads - these were containers filled with kerosene that were lit and burned all night long. Because "electric blinker lights" atop sawhorses had yet to be invented. Everyone (kids too!!!) had to be real careful not to jostle or upset the burning pots.
