One of my great-grandfathers bred horses - my mother told me he tried to raise fire horses which were in the greatest demand. You had to train a horse not to be afraid of smoke or flames - not an easy task. I guess he'd wave a small torch around a colt to see if it spooked. Then he'd holler at it. If the horse still didn't flinch, it was fire-house quality. That, or deaf and blind. Somewhat similar training is needed even today for Police Horses.
Anyway, Great Grandfather must have had some luck, he retired to Scarsdale, New York, a wealthy man. And let somebody else sweep up the poop.
