The martini is a legendary cocktail made with gin and vermouth, garnished with
an olive or lemon twist. Unless you’re James Bond who always famously ordered
“a vodka martini, shaken not stirred.”
According to Wikipedia, the martini first became popular in the 1860’s and was
originally called a “Martinez”… by 1888 the name had morphed to the now familiar
“martini”. The cocktail achieved widespread social fame and acclaim in 1912 (and
began to be written about in newspapers) when a popular bartender at the
Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City made it the house drink.
